When You Arrive
After the initial conversation with a facility member to assess whether you’re a good fit for their program, the intake process will commence. This is where staff members will go over various points such as:
- Previous alcohol or drug use
- Social life
- Mental health history
- If you’ve tried past treatments
Once they gather this information, they’ll move on to telling you what daily life is like inside their treatment facility.
There might also be legal documents you need to fill out such as confidentiality and if you want to report your progress to certain family members.
If You’re Detoxing
Whether you’ve been weaning yourself off your addiction or you’re doing so as you arrive, the facility will administer doctors and nurses to help with the withdrawal process.
This is so the side effects of detoxing are less painful.
After all the paperwork and detoxing, you’re ready to experience day-to-day life in a rehab center. Here’s a typical layout of a day you might experience.
Mornings start early so it’s best to prepare yourself for that. You’ll enjoy a healthy breakfast, and if your facility provides it there are yoga and meditation classes as well.
This is so you start to relearn how to start your mornings. Instead of sleeping in and going straight into medicating, you learn how to reshape your routine into a healthier one.
Intensive therapy and sessions happen during the daytime. After lunch, you’ll sit down with therapists and counselors to begin treatment.
These include anything from group therapy to family therapy and even cognitive behavioral therapy.
Not all time spent in a rehab facility is about treatment. You do get some time to yourself.
However, there is a catch. You aren’t allowed to leave the rehab center.
With that said, some facilities provide activities like ping-pong, reading, and even swimming.
After a long day of therapy, normally 12-step meetings will take place. This is so you can go over your day and voice your opinions. These are safe environments so you’re free to voice concerns.
Keeping on track with new healthy habits, bedtime will be at a reasonable time. Some facilities don’t have a set bedtime but it’s best to get at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
